Train suicide: Case of domestic abuse, dowry?

Train suicide: Case of domestic abuse, dowry?
New Delhi: It's another glaring example of the domestic abuse prevalent in our society.

On Sunday, a 26-year-old woman jumped in front of a train - along with her children. She was reportedly fed up with torture at the hands of her in-laws.

Beenu Vij's family is numb with pain. While her three-year-old daughter Muskan and she died instantly, her two-month-old son Abhiyan miraculously survived and is now with Beenu's husband and in-laws.

"She had complained a few times of family problems and torture. We never thought it would go this far," said Jagdish Vij, victim's father.

Beenu's suicide note does not hold anyone responsible for her death, but her family has lodged a complaint against her in-laws.

The case is with the Railway Police and a complaint has been lodged; an FIR will follow soon.

Police say they have learnt that Beena's father-in-law, mother-in-law, and brother-in-law tortured her over domestic chores. They were angry with her when she gave birth to a girl child, and also demanded dowry on and off.

"They had demanded a big car. We could only afford to give them a small one. They were unhappy," said Ruchi Vij, the victim's sister.

Beenu's suicide note says her will to live had died. Her family is trying to find closure in justice, but even that may not be easy as her husband and in-laws are absconding.
