Mother-son duo held for betting

New Delhi: Sixteen people, including a mother-son duo, were arrested in the Capital for allegedly
indulging in betting, police said on Thursday.

Sadhana (52), a "bad character" of Sultanpuri area, and her son Amit (27) were apprehended yesterday along with 14 others from her house following a tip-off, they said.

"Sadhna used to lure poor people of the area to invest money on betting. She used to tell them if their slip number is flashed in the draw, they can get their money multiplied.

"Many illiterate and poor people were wasting their hard-earned money due to her allurement. Her son Amit and other two associates Ajay Kumar and Pradeep were also assisting her to run the gambling den. Regular betting was done on IPL matches and by holding draw for matching of numbers," police said.

Sadhna is illiterate and involved in 17 cases registered under the Excise Act and three cases under NDPS Act.

Amit is also allegedly involved in three cases under Excise Act. He is married and has a son and two daughters. He allegedly helped his mother in running the betting racket, police said.

The other arrested are: Ajay Kumar, Pradeep, Rohtash, Pradeep, Prem Singh, Sanna, Noor Alam, Jagdish, Laxmi Narayan, Rohtash, Amit Kumar, Babloo, Raj Kumar and Mukesh.
