MLA's son opens fire in motorcycle shop, one dead

Lucknow: The son of a Samjawadi Party MLA has been arrested in Rae Bareilly after he allegedly opened fire in a fit of rage at a motorcycle showroom. A guard was killed; the cashier and manager of the shop were injured.

The police says that Atul Gangawar, son of SP MLA from Nawabganj Bhagwan Sharan Gangawar, and his aides, opened fire after the staff at a Civil Lines shop refused to repair a motorcycle because it was after-hours.

The police say Atul's SUV had hit an armyman's motorcycle late last night. He wanted it to be fixed. Police said Atul's vehicle had hit the motorcycle of an armyman near Chowki crossing.

"We are booking him for murder, under the Arms Act," said Prakash D, a senior police officer handling the case.

The MLA says his son fired in self-defence at the showroom staff. "My son did not fire first, he was fired at. And the police is doing a completely one-sided investigation," he alleged.

The showroom's owner, Aman Khandelwal claims that Atul and his aides were drunk.
