Man admitted for alcohol rehab says ward boys beat him up

Mumbai: For Livingstone D'silva, it was a classic case of 'where am I?' After being admitted to Masina Hospital in Mumbai for alcohol rehabilitation, D'silva was shocked to find himself awake at Hinduja Hospital. He alleges that the ward boys at Masina Hospital had beaten him up, after which he was unconscious for two days.

D'silva was admitted to Masina on April 21 and was supposed to stay there for a month. But, on April 25 when Khetsia, his wife, visited him, she found him to be in a critical condition. Khetsia said, "I reached the hospital around 9 am and I found few doctors attending to him. One of the doctors informed me that he was having some breathing problems and needed to be shifted to some big hospital."

After being shifted to Hinduja, the doctors at Hinduja checked him and were shocked to find bruise marks on his body. Khetsia said, "He had bruise marks on his shoulder, head, chest and legs. I was clueless and didn't know how to react."

After regaining consciousness, D'silva shared his entire experience. He told MiD DAY that three ward boys had beaten him on April 24 because he refused to hire all three ward boys to take care of him.

"The in-charge suggested that I hire a ward boy to take care of me. I agreed to pay the ward boy Rs 275 per day but he came with two others and asked me to hire them. When I refused bluntly, they closed the door and started beating me with cycle tubes and bamboo sticks. I passed out after that," said D'silva.

Meanwhile, the family has now lodged a complaint with the Byculla Police station, who is now investigating the case.

According to an official from the police station they are yet to start with the investigation.
