Jeweller's wife was killed for money

Pune: The city police on Thursday said three suspects in the murder of the city jeweller's wife, Jayanti Nagaraj Chhajed (55), carried out the task in a well-planned manner.

The police nabbed two suspects, Bharat Polaji Ghanchi (22) and Bharat Kaluram Ghanchi (20) from Sirohi in Rajasthan on Wednesday. The duo was later brought to the city.

Deputy commissioner of police (zone II) Rajesh Kumar Mor said Bharat Kaluram Ghanchi, who is a sweeper, was cleaning the apartment where the victim used to stay. "As per the duo's version, when he was sure that Jayanti was alone in the flat, he called up Bharat Polaji Ghanchi to commit the crime," Mor said.

However, when Bharat Polaji Ghanchi went to the victim's flat, he accidentally got locked in a room. "The duo told us that when Bharat Polaji Ghanchi could not come out, the third suspect went inside the flat and murdered the lady. The duo denied that they had murdered her," he added.

The DCP admitted that the police was ascertaining whether the suspects were cooking up a story. "We are on the look out for the third suspect," Mor added.

The police official said lust for big money was the prime reason for the suspects committing the crime. Bharat Polaji used to work in the jeweller's shop. Mor said, "The police could not recover the stolen gold ornaments and the weapons used by the suspects."

The duo was produced in the court, which remanded them to police custody till October 22.
