I don't regret killing her, says stalker who stabbed Haryana student on campus

Hisar: A day after he killed the girl he stalked, 19-year-old Chetan Sheoran appeared remorseless. The accused, a BTech student in Pune, was taken into custody after he stabbed Varsha Yadav, a 19-year-old engineering student, to death at GJUST campus in Hisar when she came out of her hostel to go home for holidays.

Satish Balan, the SSP of Hisar, told NDTV that the accused had confessed to the crime during interrogation and said he planned to commit suicide had he been successful to get away. He said, "The victim and the accused met each other in Kota where they were studying for IIT and developed a friendship. The relation turned sour when the victim joined the university here and the accused went to a college in Pune. He came here a day before yesterday. But she told him to leave her alone. He came back on Sunday, and when she ignored he slashed her throat."

In his first statement to the police he confessed to killing the girl, saying she "ruined my life". Chetan is a resident of Prem Nagar in Rohtak and is the son of an ex-serviceman, police.

SP B Satheesh said, "It was one-sided love and the boy was stalking the girl for quite some time. His frustration led to this ghastly crime."

The police accepted that the victim could have been saved had the bystanders been more helpful. Though the security guards and the witnesses helped police to grab the accused, no one stepped forward when the victim cried for help for 20 minutes as she lay in a pool of blood. "They should have helped her. If the security guards at the campus had been vigilant, they could have prevented the murder," said Mr Balan.

Manoj Kumar, the SHO said, "She screamed for help, but no one came. She could not have been saved because the wound was too severe."

According to GJUST Vice-Chancellor M L Ranga, when Varsha came out of her hostel and was heading to board an auto- rickshaw, Chetan suddenly attacked her with a knife, slitting her throat.

The shrieks of the girl alerted the university security and they nabbed him and handed him over to the police.

The victim's parents reside merely 10 kms from the campus in the BSF colony but she was staying at the hostel to avoid confronting the stalker on way to the university, police said.

The girl's father Dharam Pal Yadav is a BSF personnel posted at its Hisar camp.
