Desi version of AK47 a huge hit

Mumbai: Makers of country-made weapons seem to have taken to imitating sophisticated arms of international standards to improve their fortunes.

The Saki Naka police realised this on Thursday after they seized a country-made version of AK47, a 9mm pistol and a magazine along with cartridges from a Madhya Pradesh-based person. The police said that the accused, Suraj Singh Gujjar, 30, had come to deliver the arms cache.

"The Mumbai police have earlier seized several country-made pistols and cartridges. The supply mostly came from Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar. The suppliers of these states have become very professional and have started copying the sophisticated weapons," said a police official.

According to the police, they received information that a person from MP was coming to Mumbai to sell weapons. Following this, they laid a trap and arrested Gujjar from Khairani Road, Saki Naka, Andheri (East). He was remanded in police custody.

"We seized from him a country-made sten gun, which looks similar to an AK-47, a country-made 9mm pistol, a magazine, and 14 live rounds," said S Dhanedhar of the Saki Naka police station. "In the preliminary investigation, we found that Gujjar is a farmer residing in Madhavrao Scindia Nagar in MP's Munnar district. We are checking his criminal records and trying to find out if he has sold weapons in Mumbai earlier." The police are also investigating who had placed the order for the weapons and whom they were planning to sell the weapons to.
