Aakash leaves prison to donate a kidney

Pune: In her home in Junabazaar area in central Pune, a woman from a humble background breaks down as she hugs her son.

Aakash Nelkhade has been in jail for four years. He's serving a life sentence in connection with a murder case.

Two months ago, his mother's kidneys failed and doctors said she needed an urgent transplant. Aakash's sister could not help out because she is pregnant. So Aakash appealed to court to win special permission to donate one of his kidneys to her.

He will spend three months between hospital and home.

"It's just a small part of my body that I am donating. I belong to her. She gave me birth. I am humbled to be able to help her. I want her to live," he says.

Like any mother, Lata is more worried about her son than her own condition. ''I am so proud to have a son like Aakash. But I fear he might suffer in the process of saving my life,'' she says.

Aakash was found guilty of helping a friend to kill a man who was allegedly dating his friend's sister.
