A five-year-long courtship and temple marriage ended in the murder of a 27-year-old youth, two days after his love interest was married off to another man.
The police arrested the girl's father, Subbanna, and brother, Madhusoodan, in connection with the kidnap and murder of Vinay, a resident of Laggere. The accused persons were living in Rajagopalnagar.
Vinay and his love interest had taken marital vows at a Wilson Road temple in April this year, in the presence of the girl's parents and his relatives. His parents, however, stayed away since they were against the alliance. The girl's parents took her along with them, saying they would arrange a grand wedding. Vinay's uncle, who requested anonymity, said his nephew left home after receiving a phone call around 1.30 pm on December 4 from an unidentified person. He never came back.
After Vinay went missing, his parents, who were residing in Rajagopalnagar, lodged a complaint with the police. The police found the man's two-wheeler near the girl's house and questioned the accused.
Subbanna and Madhusoodan led the police to the Vrushabhavathi channel in Byramangala in Bidadi, where they had allegedly dumped Vinay's body, after strangulating him. Subbanna's neighbours said they had seen the accused persons thrashing Vinay on December 4. When they went to the man's help, they were threatened with dire consequences. Additionally, Subbanna's elder daughter claimed that the man had attempted to rape her.
The neighbours also said they had seen the accused persons taking the youth in a car, which returned around 1.30 am. Vinay's uncle was suspecting that the accused persons had conned the youth into going their house with the aim of eliminating him. The deceased had been living with his grandmother.
The police, meanwhile, said Vinay had refused to take the girl home, despite repeated requests by her relatives. Deputy commissioner of police (North) HS Revanna said Vinay was reluctant to go against his parent's wishes. He had even consumed poison once since his parents were opposed to the alliance.
"On December 4, Vinay went to the girl's house, two days after her marriage to another man. Fearing that he would ruin her life, the girl's brother and father kidnapped and killed him," Revanna said.
Vinay's friends, however, told a different tale. They said Vinay and the girl studied MCom at the CMR Institute in Banaswadi. The youth was not financially sound to support the girl. He later pursued MBA, and got a job as financial advisor in a private firm two months ago.
Vinay, his friends said, went to the girl's house on December 4 to take her home, since he was confident of supporting her. The girl was working at a private finance firm.
