Yamaha, the renowned Japanese motorcycle manufacturer, is preparing to introduce the Yamaha R2 in the Indian market. Since its debut in 2008, the Yamaha R15 has been a runaway success, playing a pivotal role in strengthening the brand's reputation among Indian riders. Building on that legacy, Yamaha India is now gearing up to launch the R2 sportbike, positioned as a step above the R15. Scheduled to arrive in the coming months, the R2 will debut in time for the festive season and be manufactured locally in India.
As reported by Autocar India, the Yamaha R2 will be fully designed and developed in India, with production taking place at the brand's Chennai facility. While the R2 is set to be sold domestically, Yamaha also has ambitious plans to export the model to international markets.

The report also says that the upcoming Yamaha R2 is expected to feature a liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine displacing around 200cc, possibly slightly higher. Positioned as a natural progression from the R15, it aims to deliver improved performance while remaining practical for everyday use. The R2 should offer more power than the R15's 18.4 hp and 14.2 Nm output, yet still balance efficiency. Yamaha's decision to keep the displacement modest likely reflects its focus on fuel economy, a hallmark of the R15 lineup. However, enthusiasts hoping for a larger 300-400cc jump may find the upgrade somewhat underwhelming.

Until now, Yamaha's flagship scooter in India has been the Aerox 155, but by 2026, its more practical sibling, the NMax 155, is expected to arrive as well. Alongside this, Yamaha is also developing multiple new body styles in the 300-450cc range, with cruiser and ADV models being the most likely candidates. However, these larger projects are anticipated to take longer to materialize, with their market debut expected much farther down the road.

When introduced, the Yamaha R2 will take on rivals such as the KTM RC 200, Bajaj Pulsar RS 200, and Hero Karizma XMR 210 in the Indian market. The Japanese manufacturer has already expanded its portfolio with the launch of the much-awaited neo-retro XSR 155, which shares its engine with the R15. With the R2, Yamaha aims to strengthen its sportbike lineup, offering enthusiasts a fresh option in the competitive 200cc segment.
