Toyota Land Cruiser Shrugs Off RPG Attack In Old Viral Video: Watch

A striking security video from the Philippines is recirculating on social media, capturing a Toyota Land Cruiser enduring a direct rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) strike amid an assassination attempt on a local mayor. The footage, originally from late January, shows the vehicle's resilience in extreme circumstances.

What Happened?

The event unfolded on January 25 in Maguindanao del Sur province, specifically in Shariff Aguak town. Mayor Akmad Ampatuan was en route in his black armoured Toyota Land Cruiser when attackers ambushed his convoy. Two suspects emerged from a white van parked nearby; one launched the RPG at the SUV as it approached, causing a visible explosion and smoke at the rear.

Remarkably, the Land Cruiser did not stop. It accelerated past the blast site, enabling the mayor to reach safety without injury. Ampatuan's executive assistant, Anwar Kuit Emblawa, told the Philippine News Agency that the official emerged unscathed.

The closed-circuit television recording quickly spread across social media platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, and Reddit following its initial release. Viewers have compared the scene to action sequences in video games like Grand Theft Auto, fueling its viral appeal.

Known for its ladder-frame chassis and body-on-frame construction, the Land Cruiser series has a history of performing in conflict zones and rugged terrains. This unit in the video is likely fitted with aftermarket armour plating, demonstrating how such modifications can enhance survivability against high-impact threats.

The one in the video seems to be a 300 Series Land Cruiser which comes with 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 engine which comes mater with a 10-speed automatic transmission. 

The armoured Land Cruisers like this are capable of surviving RPGs, grenades, and shots from machine guns because of their ballistic protection. These vehicles are often used for security convoys of politicians and celebrities. They also have reinforced suspension, run-flat tyres, and more such features to make them ideal for the job of providing security.
