Land Rover Defender Showcased As Multi-Role Military SUV For Indian Army: Pics

Land Rover Defender could soon become part of the Indian Army's future mobility plans. Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL), the defence arm of the Tata Group, is reportedly promoting the Defender as a Special Utility Military Vehicle for military operations in India. The proposal comes at a time when the Indian Army is looking to modernise and replace ageing light utility vehicles with more capable and versatile platforms. With its rugged construction, strong off-road ability and modular design, the Defender is being projected as a suitable vehicle for a wide range of military applications.

Land Rover Defender: Built For Multiple Military Roles

Globally, the Defender already has a strong military background. Various armed forces around the world use specially modified versions of the SUV for reconnaissance, troop movement and support duties. TASL now wants to position the Defender similarly for Indian defence use.

The SUV can be adapted for several operational roles including troop transport, logistics support, border patrol and more. Its flexible platform also allows installation of specialised communication systems, light weapon mounts, surveillance equipment and additional armour protection if needed.

The Defender's strong off-road capability makes it suitable for extreme conditions where the Indian Army regularly operates. From deserts and rough rural terrain to snowy mountain regions and high-altitude areas, the SUV is designed to handle difficult environments with ease.

About Land Rover Defender

The Land Rover Defender is sold in India in three body styles, Defender 90, Defender 110 and Defender 130. Depending on the version, it can seat between five and eight passengers, making it useful for troop movement and transport duties.

Engine options include a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine, a 3.0-litre diesel engine, a 5.0-litre V8 petrol motor and the range-topping 4.4-litre TwinPower Turbo V8 available on the OCTA version. The SUV comes with an all-wheel-drive system, terrain response modes and advanced suspension technology that improve its capability on uneven surfaces.

The Defender also offers high ground clearance (225 mm to 295 mm), water-wading ability and strong approach and departure angles, all of which are important for military operations in difficult terrain.

Land Rover Defender For Indian Army: Still Under Consideration

At present, the Defender has not been officially selected for Indian military service. The proposal remains under evaluation and would need to pass extensive field trials and testing before any approval is granted.

TASL had showcased the defence-spec Defender to senior Indian Army officials during a visit to its Armoured and Combat Vehicle facility in Pune last year. If selected, the Defender could become one of the most premium and advanced utility vehicles used by the Indian armed forces.
