- White plates with black letters indicate private vehicles for personal use only
- Yellow plates with black letters denote commercial vehicles such as taxis and trucks
- Black plates with yellow letters are for self-drive rental vehicles without a commercial license
Vehicle number plates in India are much more than a mandatory legal identity tag. The colour of the plate, the shade of the letters, and in some cases even the symbols used on it can instantly tell you the purpose of the vehicle. From private cars and taxis to electric vehicles, diplomatic fleets and military transport, every category follows a specific colour code laid down by the transport authorities.
For most people, white and yellow number plates are the most familiar sights on the road. However, India's vehicle registration system includes several other formats such as green plates for EVs, black plates for rentals, blue plates for diplomats, temporary registration plates and special plates for Armed Forces and constitutional authorities.
Importance Of A Vehicle Number Plate
A vehicle number plate serves as its official legal identity on Indian roads and is mandatory under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. Displayed at both the front and rear, it carries the unique registration number allotted by the respective RTO, confirming lawful registration and ownership. It is equally vital for traffic monitoring and helps authorities trace vehicles involved in violations, accidents, theft, or abandonment.
Essential Rules To Follow
The number plate of your vehicle must always be securely fitted and clearly visible at both ends. It should also remain properly illuminated to ensure readability in low-light or night-time conditions. If the plate becomes damaged, faded, or goes missing, it should be replaced at the earliest through the concerned RTO to avoid legal issues.

White Number Plate
The white number plate with black letters and numbers is the most common type used across the country. It is issued exclusively for private vehicles, which includes cars, SUVs, bikes and scooters owned by individuals for personal use.
A vehicle carrying this plate cannot be used for commercial passenger or goods transport. In simple terms, if you see a white plate, it means the vehicle is privately registered and being used by a common citizen.
This format is the default for most personal cars sold in India, from hatchbacks and sedans to premium SUVs and luxury vehicles.

Yellow Number Plate
The yellow number plate with black letters is assigned to commercial vehicles. This includes taxis, app-based cabs, buses, trucks, goods carriers, school vans, auto-rickshaws and other transport vehicles used for business purposes.
The yellow background makes these vehicles instantly recognisable on the road. Since they are commercially registered, operators may need special permits, route permissions and in some cases a commercial driving licence. Goods carriers and public transport vehicles across India predominantly use this format.

Black Number Plate
A black number plate with yellow letters is mainly seen on self-drive rental cars and bikes. These vehicles are commercially registered but differ from taxis because the customer drives the vehicle personally.
One major advantage is that the person renting the car does not need a commercial licence, even though the vehicle itself is registered for commercial use. This format is commonly used by car rental companies and subscription-based mobility providers.

Green Number Plate
Green number plates are reserved for electric vehicles, making them easy to identify as zero-emission vehicles. There are two variations- Green plate with white letters for private EVs and Green plate with yellow letters are for commercial EVs
This system helps distinguish not only EVs from petrol and diesel vehicles, but also whether the EV is privately owned or commercially deployed. Electric taxis, delivery vans and passenger EVs all fall under this colour family.

Red Number Plate
Red number plates are generally associated with temporary registration vehicles. Newly purchased cars and two-wheelers may receive these before the permanent registration is issued by the RTO.
These plates are valid for around 30 days, during which the permanent registration process must be completed. In some cases, red plates with white letters are also used for test vehicles, typically seen with dealerships, manufacturers or media test fleets.

Blue Number Plate
A blue background with white letters is used for diplomatic and embassy vehicles. These are allotted to foreign embassies, consular offices and United Nations representatives operating in India. The codes on these plates may include:
- CC for Consular Corps
- DC for Diplomatic Corps
- UN for United Nations
This makes them distinct from civilian vehicles and identifies them as part of foreign missions.

Number Plate With Upward Arrow
Vehicles used by the Indian Armed Forces feature a unique registration format that includes an upward-pointing arrow symbol, often referred to as the Broad Arrow.
Unlike civilian registrations linked to states and RTOs, these plates follow military-issued numbering systems. They are used on Army, Navy and Air Force vehicles, including transport trucks, command cars and utility vehicles.

Red Number Plate With India's Emblem
Some of the country's highest constitutional authorities use red number plates with the State Emblem of India. These are seen on official vehicles assigned to - President of India, Vice President of India, Governors, Lieutenant Governors and other top constitutional office holders. Instead of standard registration formats, these plates prioritise official insignia and authority recognition.

BH Number Plate
The BH (Bharat Series) registration was introduced to simplify vehicle transfers across states. It is especially useful for individuals with transferable jobs, such as government employees, defence personnel and private sector professionals working across multiple states. With BH registration, owners can relocate without the hassle of re-registering the vehicle in every new state.
