The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, inaugurated recently by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is now operational. With a length of around 213 km, the new expressway reduces the travel time between the two cities from over six hours to about 2.5 hours. This six-lane corridor passes through Baghpat, Shamli, and Saharanpur, with five toll plazas along the route. Commuters now face clear toll structures, raising questions on costs and payment options as FASTag passes.

Delhi-Dehradun Expressway: Route

Stretching 213 km from Akshardham in Delhi to Dehradun, the expressway includes a 12-km elevated section over Rajaji National Park to protect wildlife. Key entry points start near Akshardham, linking with the Delhi-Meerut Expressway, and pass through Uttar Pradesh districts before entering Uttarakhand. The design supports speeds up to 100 kmph, with wayside amenities like fuel stations and rest areas for convenience. However, these amenities are yet to be fully operational, as discovered by NDTV.

Delhi-Dehradun Expressway Toll Charges

Cars pay around Rs 675 for a one-way trip from Delhi to Dehradun, based on rates at five plazas. A return within 24 hours costs Rs 1,010 total, with Rs 335 extra on the way back. These align with Rs 2-3 per km estimates for light vehicles. It is worth mentioning that all plazas on the new expressway enforce FASTag for seamless payments, though final rates may be updated via NHAI.

Delhi-Dehradun Expressway: FASTag Annual Pass Validity

The FASTag Annual Pass is likely to work on this new expressway because it is operated by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI). As per the rules, the annual pass is valid on National Highways and Expressways. Priced at Rs 3,075, it covers one year or 200 trips, whichever comes first. This translates to Rs 15.37 for each toll plaza crossed. Going by the calculation, a trip on the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway with five toll plazas should cost Rs 76.85 with an annual pass.

The expressway comprises various independent segments, including National Highway 709B, National Highway 307, National Highway 344G, and the Eastern Peripheral Expressway. Additionally, this expressway enhances the link to the Char Dham highway originating from Haridwar.

Unique Qualities Of Delhi-Dehradun Expressway

The highway currently operates on a six-lane design, with the potential to expand to eight lanes. There are a total of 16 entry and exit points to improve access to cities along the route between Dehradun and Delhi and vice versa.

It also includes several elevated sections to alleviate traffic congestion and protect wildlife. The 14 km wildlife corridor located in Rajaji National Park, just south of Dehradun, has already shown evidence of animal usage, as recent images indicate. There is also a tunnel that measures 340 meters in length, situated at the southern end of the elevated wildlife corridor.
