CNG car owners in Delhi-NCR will now have to spend more on their daily commute as Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) prices have gone up once again. The latest hike has pushed the price of CNG in Delhi to Rs 80.09 per kg, increasing the overall running cost of CNG cars, autos, and cab services across the region.

This is the second CNG price hike in just two days. The increase comes at a time when global energy markets are facing pressure due to the ongoing tensions in the Middle East and the continued closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Along with rising input gas prices, the sharp appreciation of the US Dollar has also added pressure on fuel costs.

Following the revision, CNG now costs Rs 80.09 per kg in Delhi, while buyers in Noida and Ghaziabad will have to pay Rs 88.70 per kg. In Gurugram, the price has reached Rs 85.12 per kg. Other cities have also witnessed revised CNG rates, including Rs 88.58 per kg in Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, and Shamli; Rs 91.42 per kg in Kanpur; Rs 89.44 per kg in Ajmer; Rs 86.42 per kg in Banda; and Rs 89.70 per kg in Hapur.

According to Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), the latest CNG price hike has been introduced to partly balance the increasing cost of natural gas procurement and currency fluctuations. However, the biggest impact of the hike is expected to be felt by daily commuters and CNG car owners, as the running cost of CNG vehicles will now increase further.

Impact Of CNG Price Hike

The rise in CNG prices is also likely to impact public transportation fares. Since a major share of autos, taxis, and commercial vehicles in NCR run on CNG, operators may eventually pass the additional fuel burden on to passengers. In Mumbai, auto unions have already started demanding a rupee increase in the base fare after the recent rise in CNG prices.

For private buyers, the increase directly affects CNG car running costs. One of India's popular factory-fitted CNG cars, the Tata Punch which has an ARAI-claimed mileage of 22.99 km/kg, will now cost around Rs 3.48 per kilometre to run with the revised CNG price of Rs 80.09 per kg. Additionally, its 60-litre CNG tank, which roughly holds around 10 kg of gas, will now require nearly Rs 800 for a full refill.

Similarly, the Maruti Suzuki Swift CNG, powered by a 1.2-litre petrol engine, offers a claimed fuel efficiency of up to 32.85 km/kg in the manual version. With the new CNG price, the Swift CNG running cost now stands at approximately Rs 2.44 per kilometre. Its 55-litre CNG tank generally accommodates around 7 to 9 kg of gas, depending on filling conditions, meaning a full refill could now cost between Rs 560 and Rs 720.

However, the actual CNG car running cost may differ in real-world conditions, as these calculations are based on claimed mileage figures. Factors like city traffic, highway usage, driving style, load, and others can affect the overall fuel efficiency of a CNG car.
