The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is preparing to overhaul the way it monitors and maintains road quality by deploying an AI-powered dashcam monitoring system across nearly 40,000 km of national highways. As part of a massive digital upgrade to operations and maintenance, NHAI will now rely on advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to identify defects faster, reduce manual inspections, and ensure highways remain safer and pothole-free.

Dashboard Cameras On Route Patrol Vehicles

At the heart of this initiative are specialised high-resolution dashboard cameras that will be mounted on Route Patrol Vehicles (RPVs). These cameras will conduct weekly surveys of highway stretches, capturing video and image data of the road surface, signage, and surrounding infrastructure.

The AI system will then automatically analyse this footage to detect over 30 types of defects, including potholes, rutting, cracks, damaged lane markings, non-functional lighting, and broken crash barriers.

This brings real-time monitoring into the mainstream, allowing highway teams to respond much faster to road damage than the traditional manual inspection process.

What Is A Route Patrol Vehicle?

RPVs are specialised vehicles deployed by NHAI to constantly patrol and monitor national highways. They're equipped to assist stranded vehicles, supervise incidents, report hazards, and now, through the new AI system, perform intelligent road condition assessments. These vehicles ensure highway stretches are continuously watched, even in remote zones where maintenance teams cannot be present round the clock.

No, Private Dashcam Footage Will Not Be Used

A common assumption is that NHAI might tap into private vehicle dashcam feeds for monitoring road conditions. However, that's not the case. The project relies only on dedicated, NHAI-controlled RPVs equipped with authorised dashcams. This ensures data accuracy, quality control, and eliminates privacy concerns.

Extensive AI & ML Use To Improve Roads

The system uses AI/ML-trained models capable of identifying anomalies automatically, right from surface damage to illegal encroachments, broken signboards, and unauthorized median openings. Night surveys will also be conducted once a week every month to assess road studs, markings, and lighting performance.

To manage this massive data flow, NHAI will build a specialised IT platform with dashboards, analytics, and historical comparisons. All results will also integrate with the NHAI Data Lake, enabling faster repairs and long-term maintenance planning.
