Hi-tech city Hyderabad has shown the smart way to be on the move without the hassle and risk of carrying around mandatory vehicle and licence documents.

The "RTA m-wallet", a new app introduced by the Telangana Transport Department, allows users to download digital documents such as driving licence, registration certificate, fitness certificate and insurance policy papers straight from the official website and they can be accessed even when offline.

In less than 3 weeks since its launch, the app has been downloaded by nearly 3 lakh users.

So when Pavan was stopped by the traffic police in Hyderabad earlier this week, all he needed to do was flash his cellphone. The software engineer said the new app has come as a boon, saving him the bother of carrying around the documents. "I saw it on Facebook and downloaded it. It is very useful for people like me," Pavan told NDTV.

Telangana's Transport Commissioner Sanjeev Kumar Sultania said it saves the risk of losing important documents.

"When you are caught by enforcement authorities, many a time it so happens that your license and registration certificate is at home and you have to pay a fine. This concept is going to be very handy for people," he said.

Another RTA m-wallet user, Aditya Kiran, hopes the transport department will add more features, like the learner's license, slot booking and registration. "If they can include that, it will be a full-fledged app," he said.

Developers of the app assure that privacy and confidentiality is inbuilt. Rudra Teja, COO and founder of Radikal Tribe, said they are planning to add more features.

"We are working towards the integrating the Pollution Under Control certificate into the application. It will be done in the coming weeks. Insurance has already been integrated and we are working with the insurance authorities to give life data to the users, so they see their recent renewals in the applications as well."
