Lanka should devolve powers to Tamils: Chidambaram
Press Trust of India, Sunday June 7, 2009, Chennai

Sri Lanka should devolve powers to Tamils in line with the Indo-Sri Lankan Accord and "if possible go even beyond that", Union Home Minister P Chidambaram said on Sunday.

"The Sri Lankan government should implement the 13th amendment of the Indo-Lankan Accord on devolution of powers, if possible go beyond that," he told reporters after meeting Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi in Chennai to discuss the Sri Lankan Tamils issue.

Chidambaram said the Lankan government should strictly proceed towards rehabilitating the Tamils. India, he said, too was working for the internally displaced Tamils and had donated large sums of money.

Chidambaram, who called on Karunanidhi for the first time after taking charge as Home Minister in the new UPA government, said he met the DMK chief to get "inputs on what he was thinking and what has to be done for Lankan Tamils and how to rehabilitate them as well as how we should be proceed in this regard".

He said he would present Karunanidhi's "thoughts" at the union Cabinet meeting.

As a tamil, i was under impression that SL army killing innocent tamils, now i can unerstand where lies the problem and who is the real threat for tamils at Island nation. India has nothing to do with Srilanka anymore. Let them talk for their rights, no advise needed from poor Indian politicians. I believe Srilankan govt will never admit, these kind of linguistic discriminatory comments from India. Congress in tamilnadu trying to win tamil hearts, which is futile. Better luck in 2040...

All this talk about amendments and devolution of powers is total farce.GOI is unconcerned about Tamil welfare in Srilanka and is shedding crocodile tears.Where have the government aid funds gone?Have they been given to Srilankan government or some NGO's like International Red Cross?Internally Displaced Tamils are living in concentration camps amidst squalor and have been reduced to mute spectators GOI has infact condoned the genocide and have supported Srilanka at UN so that no war crime enquiry is conducted. This is a real pity As a matter of fact the government has come to power only because the Tamils believed in the UPA and voted for them enmasse. Now people of TN have been back stabbed by the same UPA.Surely there will be some kind of repercussion and the government has to answer some tough questions May the souls of the innocent Tamils killed in this mindless war of revenge and retribution rest in peace
