How India helped destroy LTTE
NDTV Correspondent, Saturday August 22, 2009, New Delhi

In the eelam War IV in Sri Lanka that ended with the death of LTTE chief Vellupillai Prabhakaran on May 19, India had outwardly adopted a hands off policy in the Sri Lanka conflict because of domestic political compulsions in Tamil Nadu.

New Delhi had maintained that it will not give any offensive weapons to Sri Lanka. But a new book, written by NDTV's defence editor Nitin Gokhale, who had extensively reported the war for the channel, reveals that India had actively if covertly helped the Sri Lankan military to scour out and destroy the LTTE.

For instance:

  • India quietly transeferred five Mi-17 helicopters to Sri Lanka which were used in operations against the LTTE
  • Indian Navy's Dornier aircraft fitted with powerful radars actively flew reconnaissance missions over the high seas to locate LTTE's "floating Warehouses," that carried large quantities of arms and ammunition
  • Active collaboration between Sri Lankan and Indian Navy helped destroy 11 such LTTE ships and severely depleted LTTE's arms supply
  • Colombo kept New Delhi informed every step  Three top Sri Lankan officials were in constant touch with India's National Security Adviser, the foreign secretary and the Defence Secretary

As a Sri Lankan Tamil, I feel that India slammed the Lankan Tamils in the back rather than front. This war is not a victory by fair and square. Sri Lanka won this war by the help of India, China, Pakistan and Iran. Now it is clear that India always against the Tamils in Sri Lanka and how can they do this. This war led to a blood bath and India betrayed us. Lankan Tamils are very close to Indian Tamils and you have shown the real face to Lankan Tamils. I thought India is a non-violent nation and now there is 3 million Tamils trapped in the concentration camps and human rights violations against Tamils are greatrt in Sri Lanka. We never thought India will do this, but you did this same in 1980s by bring the Indian military. In the game of geopolitics, Tamils becam,e as the victims. Now China have more power on Sri Lanka than India. Sri Lanka also going to train Pakistani Armies on Tamil land. Where is the Indian army to safe Tamils? When we suffered, no help from Bharata Maata. Lankan Tamils believe in justice and we will win one day! Next time if India wants to help Lankan govenrment do it openly and let the Tamil Nadu people know about the real non-violent face of India. Even after the war is finished, there is no poltical solution to Tamils and there are women, children and elders sufering in the concentration camps. Many Westrn nations are condeming on Lankan government's human rights violations and war proboles, but our great brother nation is silent. If India beliieves in secularlism, atleast now help the Lankan Tamils and bring a real and permanent poltical soultion to Lankan Tamis. Lankan Tamils have suffered for more than 30 years, we want a vision, which could bring peace to Tamils and Muslims. When Indian military officials helps Lankan armies, they have to think about the future of the Tamils. To what extent, would Lankan government bring a real political solution? They have lacked that will for the last 60 years or so, and many Lankan Tamils in diaspora are not believing the current government of Sri Lanka either. If Gandhiji is alive, he would help us to get equal rights.
