The Prime Minister's Office - Now on Twitter

The Prime Minister's Office - Now on Twitter
New Delhi: At 7:28 pm this evening Dr Manmohan Singh joined Twitter. His handle - @PMOIndia and this is the "Official Twitter account of the Prime Minister's office, New Delhi."

His first tweet - "You make all of us proud" - PM tells young bravehearts, children who are honoured for their acts of courage and meritorious deeds, at the ceremony to give out the National Bravery Awards at his residence  - 7, Race Course Road.

A couple more tweets on the National Bravery Awards followed.

On Thursday, hours after joining the Prime Minister's team, Pankaj Pachauri, tweeted about Dr Singh's meetings with experts on skill development and provided links to a public speech by the Prime Minister.

However, those tweets were made on his personal Twitter handle, which now introduces him as "communications adviser to the Prime Minister's Office" but with the caveat that the "views here are personal".

The Prime Minister has been criticised for being inaccessible to the media. Last year, his government hurtled from one crisis to another. In anti-corruption crusader Anna Hazare, middle class India found a voice for the over-whelming frustration with omnipresent graft. In June 2011, the PM finally picked five print editors for a brief interaction.

Last month, he spoke to Bloomberg about his government's disastrous handling of reforms in retail. His new policies had to be suspended after key ally Mamata Banerjee refused to support new rules that would allow international super-chains like Walmart and Tesco to sell directly to Indian consumers.
