BSF battles bolder militants, bitter cold at border

Jammu: Attempts to infiltrate from across the border have increased, troops are on high alert with round-the-clock patrolling and a harsh, foggy winter makes things twice as difficult.

The border areas are windy and icy. When an NDTV team reached the Indo-Pak border patrol team in R. S. Pura, it was three degrees Celsius.

BSF Constable Suresh Kumar says: "Due to the dense fog, we can't see anything. But we need to patrol at least six hours every night.''

Militants routinely take advantage of foggy winter nights, hence patrols have to be doubly alert. Last week, two big infiltration attempts have been foiled at nearby Akhnoor.

"We need to put in extra duty hours. Visibility is very low due to fog. We need to patrol all night,'' explains BSF Constable Gurubaksh.

At daybreak, another batch of jawans takes over, but the weather is no better. There is dense fog on the borders and visibility is very low.

For the BSF jawans, fighting extreme weather at the enemy lines is a dual battle.
