In Mystery Death of Man, AAP's Latest Challenge To Police

A video has surfaced showing the man, Shahnawaz Chaudhary, lying on the road and shouting that he was beaten up.

New Delhi: Delhi's ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which has repeatedly demanded the control of the city's police, may take them to court over the death of a man moments after a run-in with the cops.

AAP leader Ashutosh said that if the police does not register a case in this matter, the party will move the National Human Rights Commission and is also considering filing a case in a court.

Rajendra Gautam, the AAP legislator from the Seemapuri, met the family of the 35-year-old man, Shahnawaz Chaudhary, and said the police had brushed the case to "shield the culprits".

Shahnawaz's wife Mamata, in her statement before the magistrate, has alleged that after beating Shahnawaz, police bundled him in the police vehicle.  "Three policemen sat on Shahnawaz while a fourth kept beating him," she alleged.

She has also accused the police of coercing her into making a false statement.

Yesterday, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and his deputy Manish Sisodia told Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung that the police had acted questionably and should be reprimanded.

A video clip purportedly of the incident on Monday showed Shahnawaz lying on the road and shouting that he was beaten up. His wife is also seen screaming and being restrained by a policewoman.

He died shortly after he intervened in a roadside fight between a man and his wife. Shahnawaz was on a bike with his own wife when he stopped at spotting the fighting couple.

The woman, Farha, had called the police, accusing her husband of domestic violence.

The police allege that Shahnawaz was drunk and attempted to pull Farha out of their van. When the police tried to stop him, there was a struggle.

The police claim that on the way to a police station, Shahnawaz started complaining of nausea and discomfort. By the time he was taken to hospital, he was dead, they claimed.
