In a gruesome incident, a 22-year old woman suffered serious burn injuries when a middle-aged person poured acid on her for allegedly rejecting his proposal for marriage at Aranmula on Saturday.
The victim, Anjali Krishana, a staff of a private school, was admitted to Medical College at Kottayam along with her mother who tried to save her from the attack.
Police said she had serious injuries on her face but the mother had some minor injuries. Efforts were on to nab him, who fled the scene after the attack, police said.
According to family sources, the man, a divorcee, used to harass her with marriage proposal. However, the woman and her family had not shown interest in the alliance.
Meanwhile, CPI (M) leader and Rajya Sabha member T N Seema condemned the attack on the girl and said the incident was shocking.
"Such attacks are usually reported from northern states, so, the incident of the acid attack for rejecting marriage proposals in Kerala should be seen very seriously," Seema said. She also wanted steps to nab the culprit.
