High Court orders judicial inquiry into charge of police torture

Chennai: Madras High Court has ordered a judicial inquiry into a complaint that a man was illegally detained and physically tortured by police.

Justice N Paul Vasanthakumar ordered Principal Sessions Judge, Tiruvallur to inquire into the complaint and submit a report before the Court in eight weeks.

A woman filed a petition alleging that on June 16 some police personnel came to her residence in a vehicle, assaulted her son G Arun and took him away.

Not knowing his whereabouts, she had sent telegrams to police officials and made representations to officials to release her son, but in vain.

On June 20, she came to know her son was remanded before Judicial Magistrate No II, Ponneri and when she visited him, she found injuries on his body, she said.

Medical checkups also found injuries on his body, she claimed.
