14 Arrested for Clashes in East Delhi's Trilokpuri; Colony Still Tense

There's still heavy police presence in Trilokpuri which saw clashes between two groups on Thursday

New Delhi: Trilokpuri in Delhi continues to be under heavy police deployment after rioting on Diwali last Thursday, followed by more communal clashes over several days. No violence has been reported in the sensitive east Delhi locality since Sunday; prohibitory orders will continue, the police have said.

Following are the latest developments in the story:

  1. 14 people were arrested on Sunday and have been charged with spreading rumours and fanning tension in the area. They were booked under Indian Penal Code sections 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) and section 182 (false information) among others, the police said.

  2. Those arrested, the police alleged, had spread rumours and misinformation through social media and had also made hoax calls to police about violence and stone pelting. 192 hoax calls have been received in the last four days and these are being traced as more potential "troublemakers" are monitored, the police said.

  3. 19 people, including 13 policemen, have been injured in the communal clashes, that began after two groups of people pelted stones at each other on Diwali evening. On Saturday, five others received serious head injuries.

  4. According to the police, residents of the area say "outsiders" had started the clash between two groups on Diwali night.

  5. A number of vehicles belonging to locals and policemen were reportedly vandalised; some shops were set on fire.

  6. A large contingent of police personnel along with the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) have been tasked with ensuring law and order in Trilokpuri, which is divided into 36 blocks, some of them very congested.

  7. Over 30 Police Control Room vans, water cannons and riot control vehicles are stationed in the area.

  8. The police have appealed to the people of the area to maintain peace and harmony and not to believe rumours. Local peace committees have been set up to help the police restore law and order and defuse tension.

  9. More than 70 people have been arrested so far in connection with the incident and the police have advised the public to refrain from visiting the area.

  10. With a curfew-like situation, nobody is allowed to move out. With restrictions on movement and shops being closed, residents are facing major problems with the availability of essential commodities.
