"The leaders discussed bilateral cooperation, including in the economic, financial, and energy sectors, and expressed satisfaction with the sustained growth in bilateral ties in these areas. ​The two leaders also discussed regional and global issues, including the latest developments concerning Ukraine. Prime Minister reiterated his support for the recent initiatives that have been taken to address the conflict in Ukraine, and emphasized the need to expedite a cessation of the conflict and find a durable peace settlement," the Ministry of External Affair said in a statement.

SCO "strongly condemns" Pahalgam attack, echoes PM Modi's "double standards in fight against terrorism unacceptable" message

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin took turns Monday to swipe at the West during a gathering of Eurasian leaders in China. The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), comprising China, India, Russia, Pakistan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Belarus, is touted as a non-Western style of collaboration and seeks to be an alternative to traditional alliances.

Xi told the SCO leaders, that the global international situation was becoming more "chaotic and intertwined". He also slammed "bullying behaviour" from certain countries -- a veiled reference to the United States.

Putin used his speech to defend Russia's Ukraine offensive, blaming the West for triggering the three-and-a-half year conflict that has killed tens of thousands and devastated much of eastern Ukraine. "This crisis wasn't triggered by Russia's attack on Ukraine, but was a result of a coup in Ukraine, which was supported and provoked by the West," Putin said.

The Member States strongly condemned the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on 22 April 2025. In a joint statement, they expressed their deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the dead and the wounded. They further stated that perpetrators, organizers and sponsors of such attacks must be brought to justice.

he Member States, while reaffirming their firm commitment to the fight against terrorism, separatism, and extremism, stress the inadmissibility of attempts to use terrorist, separatist and extremist groups for mercenary purposes. They recognize the leading role of sovereign States and their competent authorities in countering terrorist and extremist threats.

SCO members "strongly condemned" the Pahalgam terror attack, saying "double standards in fight against terrorism unacceptable." The joint statement from member states echoed PM Narendra Modi's earlier statement on terrorism.

Russian president Vladimir Putin said on Monday that understandings reached during his summit with U.S. President Donald Trump at a summit in August open a way to find a resolution to the crisis in Ukraine.

"In this regard, we highly appreciate the efforts and proposals from China and India aimed at facilitating the resolution of the Ukrainian crisis," Putin said at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation forum in Tianjin.

"I would also note that the understandings reached at the recent Russia–U.S. meeting in Alaska, I hope, also contribute toward this goal."

Russian President Vladimir Putin sought on Monday to defend his Ukraine offensive to Moscow's allies, blaming the West for triggering the three-and-a-half year conflict that has killed tens of thousands and devastated much of eastern Ukraine.

"This crisis wasn't triggered by Russia's attack on Ukraine, but was a result of a coup in Ukraine, which was supported and provoked by the West," Putin said at a summit of the the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation in the Chinese city of Tianjin.

"The second reason for the crisis is the West's constant attempts to drag Ukraine into NATO," the Russian president added.

PM Modi addressed the SCO Summit's plenary session which included the participation of more than 20 foreign leaders and 10 heads of international organisations.

The friendly interactions between PM Modi, Russia's Vladimir Putin, and China's Xi Jinping come amid their own strained ties with the US.

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday pledged to provide 2 billion yuan (about 281 million U.S. dollars) in grant to member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) within this year.

The summit meeting of the Heads of State of the 10-member Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) began here on Monday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi along with other leaders of the organisation began a day-long deliberation to chalk out the future course of the bloc. Chinese President Xi Jinping welcomed the leaders.

The 25th summit was formally kicked off here on Sunday night with a massive banquet hosted by Xi . It was attended, among others, by Prime Minister Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation has set a model for a new type of international relations, Xi said in opening remarks addressing more than 20 world leaders at a two-day summit held in northern China's Tianjin, adding that the forum unequivocally opposed external interference.

Xi spoke about constructive participation in international affairs, opposing hegemonism and power politics, as well as promoting multilateralism in his remarks.

The security-focused bloc, which began as a group of six Eurasian nations, has expanded to 10 permanent members and 16 dialogue and observer countries in recent years.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Tianjin, China to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit on Monday, marking a significant diplomatic engagement with regional powers.

The SCO summit will see participation from key regional leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Prime Minister Modi, President Xi, and President Putin will all share the stage at the multilateral event, underlining the significance of regional cooperation at a time of global uncertainty.

On the sidelines of the Tianjin summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is also scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin, as US President Donald Trump escalates tensions with New Delhi over its purchase of Moscow's crude. Ties between New Delhi and Moscow came under scrutiny after the Trump administration in August imposed 50 per cent tariffs on Indian goods bound for the US, the highest in Asia, to penalise it for those energy purchases. 

 Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in China's Tianjin on Sunday, stating India's developmental cooperation with the Indian Ocean island country is beneficial for the people of both nations.

As leaders from across Asia congregate for the Shanghai Cooperation Summit, lighter moments are being witnessed apart from discussions on pressing issues like trade, development and regional conflicts.

As the spotlight shone brightly on PM Modi's visit to China after seven years, Chinese state media has given significant coverage to the visit, highlighting both countries' growing cooperation and proactive approach to foreign policy.

A "cooperative pas de deux of the dragon and the elephant" should be the right choice for the two countries, The Global Times reported.

PM Modi's China visit recalled an incident when India's 'Super Spy' Ajit Doval took a firm stand on the country's sovereignty five years ago.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan hosted a banquet at the Meijiang Convention and Exhibition Center in Tianjin to welcome the international guests attending the 2025 Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit.

Over 20 foreign heads of state and government, including spouses of SCO member states, observer states, dialogue partners, and guests of the chairing country, and 10 heads of international organisations, including the UN Secretary-General, arrived one after another.

Guards of Honour lined up in salute, sources told IANS. Accompanied by international music, the international guests marched along a red carpet, passing through a magnificent parade of flags composed of the participating countries, the SCO flag, and the UN flag.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Turkmenistan President Serdar Berdimuhamedow on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit and discussed perspectives on various issues.

He met Uzbekistan's President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and noted that the two countries are "bound by a dynamic partnership".

PM Modi also held a "very productive conversation" with Kyrgyz President Sadyr Japarov.

PM Modi met his Armenian counterpart Nikol Pashinyan and noted that the two nations share warm and growing ties.

He held talks with his Vietnamese counterpart Pham Minh Chinh and expressed India's willingness to further deepen ties with Vietnam in defence, trade, green energy and other sectors.

The latest summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization is being seen as a possible challenge to often incoherent approaches by the United States to trade and regional conflicts.

China has extended support in fighting terror to India during the talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, the foreign ministry said today. 

"All I will say without going into specifics is the issue was discussed, raised by the Prime Minister. He outlined his understanding very crisply and specifically. He outlined the fact that this is the scourge that India and China are both victims of," foreign secretary Vikram Misri told reporters.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said that Chinese President Xi Jinping has been invited by Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the BRICS summit to be held in India in 2026.

The Ministry of External Affairs said in a press briefing that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping discussed in a meeting that India and China are partners and not rivals.

They further agreed that the two countries' interests outweigh differences.

Peace along the borders was among the key points discussed in the meeting, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping held key bilateral talks and reaffirmed that the two neighbours were "development partners and not rivals", New Delhi said after the meeting of the two leaders on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in China's Tianjin.

In an official statement on the meeting, the Ministry of External Affairs said the two leaders welcomed the "positive momentum and steady progress" in bilateral relations since their last meeting in Russia's Kazan in October 2024.

They reaffirmed that the "differences" between India and China "should not turn into disputes".

"A stable relationship and cooperation between India and China and their 2.8 billion people on the basis of mutual respect, mutual interest and mutual sensitivity are necessary for the growth and development of the two countries, as well as for a multipolar world and a multi-polar Asia befitting the trends of the 21st century," the MEA statement read.

India and China shoulder the responsibility of promoting unity and advancing the progress of human society, Beijing said on Sunday, in its official statement on President Xi Jinping's meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Summit in Tianjin.

The two leaders spoke for nearly an hour at the meeting that assumed significance amid rapidly improving India-China relations and Washington's tariff tussle. In its statement after the meeting, Beijing said the world's two most populous countries are important members of the Global South.

China and India, it said, "shoulder the important responsibility of benefiting their peoples, promoting unity and revitalization among developing countries, and advancing the progress of human society. Being good-neighbourly friends and partners for mutual success and achieving a 'Dancing of the Dragon and the Elephant' should be the right choice for both China and India."

Senior Chinese journalist Shen Shiwei on Sunday said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's first visit in seven years to China is a "milestone" for bilateral ties.

Speaking to NDTV after PM Modi and President Xi Jinping held talks on the sidelines of the two-day Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in China's Tianjin, Mr Shiwei called the meeting "a reset for bilateral ties". 

"I think that has paved a very strong path for the bilateral ties, and especially for the communications among different ministries," he said.

Mr Shiwei said PM Modi's visit was good for both sides "politically, economically and also for the culture-to-culture and the people-to-people exchange".

When Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed in China on Saturday for the 25th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Tianjin, it was another chapter in the long, complicated story of India's engagement with its northern neighbour. Over 70 years ago, Jawaharlal Nehru became the first Indian prime minister to visit the People's Republic of China, in what was then hailed as a historic breakthrough in diplomacy.

In 1954, Nehru embarked on what he called the "most important foreign mission of his life." He was the first non-communist leader to set foot in Beijing since Mao Zedong's victory in 1949. The Chinese government welcomed him with great fanfare.

"The six miles between city and airport were walled by unbroken banks of humanity, clapping, cheering and crying the inescapable Chinese slogan, 'Long live peace'," The New York Times reported at the time.

Accompanied by his daughter Indira Gandhi, Nehru met Mao and Premier Zhou Enlai, and travelled through Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing and Guangzhou. To Nehru, who dreamed of an Asia free from Cold War rivalries, the trip seemed to cement a new era of friendship.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, in his opening remarks during the bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said it is the "right choice" for India and China to be "friends". Calling the two countries "ancient civilisations" in the East, Xi Jinping welcomed PM Modi to China and recalled their last meeting in Russia's Kazan. LIVE UPDATES

The two leaders had met last in October 2024 during the BRICS Summit in Russia.

"It is a great pleasure to meet you again, Mr Prime Minister. I welcome you to China for the SCO summit. Last year, we had a successful meeting in Kazan. We are the world's two most populous countries, and we are also important members of the Global South. We both shoulder the historical responsibility of improving the well-being of our two peoples, promoting the solidarity and rejuvenation of developing countries, and promoting the progress of human society. It is the right choice for both countries to be friends who have good neighbourly and amicable ties, partners who enable each other's success, and to have the dragon and the elephant come together," Xi Jinping said.

He further highlighted that this year marks the 75th anniversary of China-India diplomatic relations.

When US President Donald Trump intensified his trade war with China earlier this year, Beijing began an outreach to India with a private letter from President Xi Jinping to President Droupadi Murmu, a Bloomberg report claims.

According to the report, which cited an unnamed Indian official as its source, Xi's letter was intended as a test of India's willingness to recalibrate ties with China. Although the letter was sent to President Murmu, the message was swiftly conveyed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In the note, President Xi expressed concern about any prospective US-India agreements that might harm Beijing's interests, the report claimed. The Chinese premier also named "a provincial official who would steer Beijing's efforts," the report stated.

It further added that PM Modi's government began taking the Chinese outreach seriously in June, amid its own talks with the United States over Trump's tariff threats and his claim that it was he who brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan following the sharp regional escalation over the Pahalgam terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir in which 26 people were killed.

"Last year in Kazan, we had very fruitful discussions, which gave a positive direction to our relations. After the disengagement on the border, an atmosphere of peace and stability has been created," he said in his opening remarks, referring to the meeting between the two leaders in Russia in October, on the sidelines of the BRICS summit.

Tianjin is hosting the largest-ever Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, a premier diplomatic event that will bring together leaders from over 20 nations.

This year's summit promises to be a showcase of innovation and technology. A humanoid robot, Xiao He, has been positioned to provide multilingual support, answering queries and assisting journalists in multiple languages.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping's bilateral meeting concluded after over 50 minutes. The two leaders met amid the tariffs imposed by the US and China's own unstable ties with the US.

PM Modi on Saturday shared his remarks from the bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping. 

"Last year in Kazan, we had very fruitful discussions which gave a positive direction to our relations. After the disengagement on the border, an atmosphere of peace and stability has been created. An agreement has been reached between our Special Representatives regarding border management. Kailash Mansarovar Yatra has been resumed. Direct flights between the two countries are also being resumed. The interests of 2.8 billion people of both countries are linked to our cooperation. This will also pave the way for the welfare of the entire humanity," he said.

He added, "We are committed to taking our relations forward on the basis of mutual trust, respect and sensitivity."

Russian President Vladimir Putin has asserted that Moscow and Beijing are "united in strengthening" the BRICS grouping to address global issues, including showing opposition to "discriminatory sanctions" which he claims are impeding the socioeconomic development of member states and the broader international community.

In an interview with Xinhua News Agency, ahead of the upcoming 25th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit taking place in the Tianjin municipality of China, the Russian President underlined the deepening cooperation between the two nations within multilateral platforms, emphasising their role in transforming BRICS into a "key pillar of global architecture" and supporting reforms in global financial institutions.

The Russian President further criticised the use of financial tools as a form of "neo-colonialism" and said BRICS seeks inclusive progress benefitting the "Global Majority".

"Alongside our Chinese partners, we support the reform of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank. We are united in the view that a new financial system must be based on openness and true equity, providing equal and non-discriminatory access to its tools for all countries and reflecting the real standing of member states in the global economy. It is essential to end the use of finance as an instrument of neo-colonialism, which runs counter to the interests of the Global Majority. On the contrary, we seek progress for the benefit of all humanity," Putin stated, as quoted by Xinhua News Agency.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping will hold a bilateral meeting today at 9:30 am. According to sources, the meeting is likely to last for 40 minutes.

The meeting assumes significance in view of a sudden downturn in India-US ties triggered by Washington's policies on trade and tariffs.

PM Modi and Xi will meet on the sidelines of the two-day Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit beginning Sunday. Considering the scope of issues for discussion, official sources indicated that they could meet again later in the day. The two leaders last met in October in Kazan, Russia, on the sidelines of the BRICS summit.

Before leaving for India on Monday, PM Modi is also expected to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The SCO summit will begin with an official banquet hosted by Xi on Sunday.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a telephone conversation on Saturday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky ahead of the SCO summit, where they discussed the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and expressed India's full support for efforts to restore peace and stability.

"Thank you, President Zelensky, for his phone call today. We exchanged views on the ongoing conflict, its humanitarian aspects, and efforts to restore peace and stability. India extends full support to all efforts in this direction," PM Modi wrote on X.

In his statement, President Zelensky shared details of the conversation, which also covered talks with President Trump and Ukraine's ongoing efforts to engage in peace discussions with Russia. He reaffirmed Ukraine's readiness to meet with Russia's head, despite Russia's continued attacks on civilian targets.

"I spoke with Prime Minister of India @NarendraModi. I informed him about the talks with President Trump in Washington, with the participation of European leaders. It was a productive and important conversation, a shared vision among partners on how to achieve real peace. Ukraine reaffirmed its readiness for a meeting with the head of Russia," Zelensky said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi received a warm welcome from the Indian diaspora on Saturday as he arrived at Binhai International Airport in Tianjin for a two-day official visit to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in China. He was greeted by senior Chinese and Indian officials.

This marks PM Modi's first visit to China in seven years. 

Members enthusiastically greeted him and chanted "Bharat Mata ki Jai" and "Vande Mataram" to express admiration and support.

Later on, PM Modi enjoyed a performance by Chinese artists playing Indian classical musical instruments like sitar, santoor and tabla at the hotel. The performers have been learning Indian classical music and dance for years.
