Khamenei's Wife, Injured In US-Israel Strikes, Has Died: Iranian Media

Mansoureh Khojasteh Bagherzadeh - the wife of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader who was killed on Saturday - has died after succumbing to wounds sustained during the US-Israeli attack, Iranian media reported. She was 79.

She had been in a coma since strikes on Saturday killed Khamenei, the Tasnim news agency said.

The two married in 1964 and she lived largely outside the public eye. Although little is known about her, the couple had six children.

The 86-year-old Khamenei was killed when his compound was bombed in a coordinated US-Israeli airstrike on Tehran early Saturday, with the Iranian state media confirming the death on Sunday. Four members of his family including his daughter and a grandchild, were also killed. 

Ali Shamkhani, a top advisor to Khamenei, and the head of Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guards, General Mohammad Pakpour, were also among those killed.

One prominent survivor, Ali Larijani, head of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, vowed defiance.

Khamenei was the successor to the Revolution's founder, Ruhollah Khomeini. Since 1989, his "story" was one of unwavering defiance against Western influence.

His death is being portrayed by state media as the Martyrdom of the Guardian, framing his end not as a defeat, but as a final sacrifice for the sovereignty of the nation.

Iran's ballistic missile sites, navy headquarters and warships were attacked as well. Iran said strikes also targeted the Natanz nuclear enrichment site. Israel and the US have not acknowledged strikes at the site, though Israel has said it is targeting the "leadership and nuclear infrastructure."

Khamenei had no designated successor. 

Iran has set up a three-member leadership council, and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said a new supreme leader would be chosen in "one or two days." 

On the streets, there have been scattered celebrations over Khamenei's death. Internet restrictions in Iran have complicated efforts to monitor what's happening.
