Universal Studios Eyes Saudi Arabia For New Theme Park Project: Report

Saudi Arabia's push to become a major global entertainment hub may soon get a big Hollywood-style boost. According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, Universal Studios has begun early discussions around setting up a theme park in the kingdom, a move that could change the theme park scene in the Middle East.

The project is still at a very early stage. Sources familiar with the matter told the publication that initial planning and concept work are underway. If it moves ahead, the park would place Universal in direct competition with Disney, which has long dominated the global theme park space.

The report states that Comcast Corporation, Universal's parent company, is leading the early work on the project. The theme park may be funded by a Saudi government-backed entity. This would likely happen through a licensing arrangement with Universal, rather than direct ownership.

Comcast CEO Brian Roberts recently visited Saudi Arabia. As per the report, he travelled to the country last month for an investment conference. During the trip, he also visited Qiddiya, the massive entertainment and sports development that is being built near Riyadh and is central to Saudi Arabia's tourism plans.

For context, Comcast is a major name in the global media and telecom space. Based in Philadelphia, the company operates the Xfinity brand, which offers cable TV, internet and mobile services. It also owns a wide range of entertainment platforms, including NBCUniversal, the Peacock streaming service and Universal's theme parks.
