Step Inside Japan's Roadside Station Kurukuru Naruto, Where Everything Is A Sweet Potato

In winter, Japan transforms into a mystical wonderland, with snow-covered temples in Kyoto, powdery ski towns such as Hokkaido, and steaming onsens in Hakone. But have you heard of Kurukuru Naruto, a unique food-themed park? This roadside station in Naruto City, Tokushima Prefecture, is a world of its own.

Kurukuru Naruto, known as the "ultimate sweet-potato stop" in Japan, specialises in the delicious Naruto Kintoki sweet potato. 'Naruto' refers to the city where the potatoes are grown, and 'Kintoki' means gold. These potatoes have golden flesh and a chestnut-like texture, rich and sweet-ideal for both sweet and savoury dishes. Want to see what it looks like? Once inside Kurukuru Naruto, you'll find everything sweet-potato themed. A grass-covered rooftop serves as a playground, featuring rides and equipment inspired by the region's produce. Inside the facility, visitors have plenty to choose from: sweet potatoes, sea bream, lotus root, soft-serve ice cream, baked goods, gourmet dishes and packaged snacks. 

Shoppers can also pick up souvenirs to take home. Some visitors rent bicycles to explore the surrounding area, while others climb the rooftop deck for Instagram-worthy views of Naruto City-then enjoy a gentle zip‑line adventure onsite, perfect for families and thrill-seekers.

1. Onaruto Bridge: An engineering marvel linking Tokushima Prefecture to Awaji Island across the Naruto Strait. It's especially stunning at sunrise and sunset.

• By air: The nearest airport is Tokushima Awaodori Airport, a 15-20-minute drive from Naruto.
