Do You Get Any Refund On Cancelled Tatkal Tickets?

If you have ever booked a Tatkal ticket, you already know the adrenaline that comes with it. One second the seats are available, and the next moment they are gone. Because Tatkal bookings usually happen in a rush, many travellers only worry about securing a seat and think about cancellations later, often when plans suddenly change. That is when the real anxiety kicks in. Can you cancel a Tatkal ticket? Will you get any money back? Are the refund rules the same as the normal tickets?

The truth is that Tatkal cancellation rules are stricter, slightly confusing and definitely less forgiving. Many passengers assume there must be at least a partial refund for any ticket, but Tatkal works differently. And understanding these details beforehand can save you money, frustration and last-minute surprises. So let us break down what really happens when you cancel a Tatkal ticket and the situations where you can get a refund.

Are Confirmed Tatkal Tickets Refundable?

In most situations, a confirmed Tatkal ticket is non-refundable. If you booked a Tatkal seat that is fully confirmed and you cancel it voluntarily, the railways will not return any part of the fare. This rule is clearly stated in the official cancellation guidelines, which specify that no fare is refunded when a confirmed Tatkal ticket is cancelled by the passenger under normal circumstances. Updated Tatkal guidance also confirms that voluntary cancellations of confirmed Tatkal tickets always lead to zero refund, regardless of the reason or timing.

So if you have a sudden plan change, missed the train or booked the wrong date, cancelling a confirmed Tatkal ticket unfortunately does not give you your money back. This is why Tatkal bookings always come with a small risk.

What About Waitlisted Tatkal Tickets?

Here is where the rules soften a little. If you book a waitlisted Tatkal ticket, it behaves differently from confirmed ones. A waitlisted Tatkal ticket can be cancelled and you will receive a refund, just as you would with a regular waitlisted ticket. If you cancel it before chart preparation, the fare is refunded after deducting only the standard clerkage charge. For e-tickets, IRCTC also automatically cancels waitlisted Tatkal tickets after the charts are prepared and processes the refund without you needing to do anything. 

Are Partially Confirmed Tatkal Tickets Refundable?

Partially confirmed Tatkal tickets are the trickiest of all. On a single ticket, if some passengers get confirmed seats and others remain waitlisted, then the refund depends on whether you cancel the entire ticket. In such cases, cancellation before departure allows a refund for all passengers after deducting clerkage, provided that the complete Tatkal ticket is surrendered or cancelled together.

If you choose to travel with the confirmed passengers and not cancel the ticket, you cannot claim a refund later simply because some seats were not confirmed.

When Do You Actually Get A Full Refund On A Tatkal Ticket

Although voluntary cancellation does not offer refunds, there are specific exceptions when Tatkal passengers are eligible for a full refund:

1. Train Cancelled By Railways

If your train is cancelled due to operational reasons, you receive a full refund even on a Tatkal booking. This falls under general railway refund rules applicable to all tickets, including Tatkal.

2. Train Running Over Three Hours Late And You Choose Not To Travel

Non-commencement of journey for this reason is also eligible for refund under broader cancellation rules referenced in Tatkal guidelines.

3. Downgraded Travel Class

If you are forced to travel in a lower class due to unavailability of reserved accommodation, the fare difference is refunded and Tatkal charges can also be compensated in such situations.

These are the only scenarios where a Tatkal passenger can claim a legitimate refund without restrictions.
