What's The Initiative About?

Home to more than 600 species of orchids, Arunachal Pradesh boasts the highest diversity of these flowers in India. If rebranded as the Orchid Capital of the country, the state could attract tourists, nature lovers, and botanists to its pristine landscapes - giving a major boost to its tourism industry. Chief Minister Pema Khandu recently chaired a review meeting with the planning department, which presented strategies for launching integrated tourism campaigns across the state.

In addition to orchids, Arunachal Pradesh is gaining attention for another natural gem - kiwi fruit. The state's hilly terrain provides ideal conditions for kiwi cultivation. Efforts are underway to promote kiwi as a regional highlight. By boosting production and expanding market access, kiwi farming could emerge as a leading agricultural activity, supporting agri-tourism and creating rural employment opportunities.

As part of the initiative, the state will focus on orchid conservation - preventing over-exploitation and protecting endangered species.

Orchid viewing and photography tours are expected to become major attractions, especially during the blooming season when the hills burst into colour. Special orchid hotspots will be identified for sightseeing. The initiative will also include trekking, rafting, and mountaineering experiences for adventure lovers.

3. Cultural Tourism

Alongside ecological efforts, Arunachal Pradesh is also preserving its cultural heritage. One such initiative is the revival of Mon Shugu - the traditional art of handmade paper-making, rooted in the history of the Monpa community. Visitors will have the chance to witness the Mon Shugu process firsthand and purchase handcrafted paper products made by local artisans.
