The Maharashtra government has decided to resume metro train services from October 19 in a phased manner, weeks after the Centre, in its Unlock4 guidelines, allowed the reopening of the rapid transport system across the country.

The centre is expected to announce guidelines for the fifth phase of easing of Covid-related restrictions, or "Unlock 5", in the next couple of days as the current phase - "Unlock 4" - is due to end on Wednesday

Students of Class 9-12 in Punjab can visit schools on a voluntary basis to seek guidance from their teachers, the Amarinder Singh government on Sunday ordered, in partial modification of the Centre's Unlock4 guidelines. The relaxation will be allowed to students living outside high-risk containment zones.

Senior officials of the Metro Railway and West Bengal government met today to discuss the modalities of putting in place social distancing norms and crowd management for resumption of services.

Taking a swipe at the Centre over its guidelines of no lockdown imposition outside containment zones without prior consultation, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday said merely issuing directions is not enough, as state governments are the implementing authority and trust must be reposed on them.

Delhi reported 2,509 fresh COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, its highest single-day spike in two months, government data showed. The new cases of the highly contagious virus have taken the overall infections in the national capital to 1, 79, 569. The last biggest one-day spike was 2,520 cases on July 3.

A crucial meeting of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) is likely to take place on Wednesday to discuss reopening of Metro train services and other activities permitted under the Centre's ''Unlock 4'' guidelines, officials said.

Unlock4: The Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry is likely to issue detailed SOPs on Wednesday for running of Metro trains. Senior officials of the ministry held a meeting with all managing directors of Metro rail corporations on Tuesday to finalise the SOPs.

Unlock4: The Sun Temple at Konark in Odisha re-opened on Tuesday, for visitors, after more than five months due to the COVID-19 lockdown. The Konark Temple is a world famous tourist attraction.

The West Bengal government has allowed bars in the state to reopen from tomorrow with strict adherence to social distancing and other COVID-related protocols.

Hotels in Maharashtra have been allowed to operate with 100 per cent capacity with compliance of SOPs, the government said on Monday, announcing large scale relaxations in the COVID-19 curbs. Private offices have also been allowed to operate with a 30 per cent capacity from the present 10 per cent.
