South Korean company LG Polymers India has absolute liability for the loss of life and public health in the gas leak incident at its plant in Visakhapatnam, the NGT has said while directing that the interim penalty of ₹50 crore would be spent on compensation to the victims and the restoration of environment.

The Indian arm of a South Korean chemical major has apologised after a gas leak at its plant in Andhra Pradesh killed 11 and affected at least a thousand people. A tank used to store chemicals for making a wide variety of plastic products leaked into the air at the plant of LG Polymers India Pvt Ltd in Visakhapatnam on Thursday.

The National Green Tribunal slapped an interim penalty of Rs 50 crore on LG Polymers India and sought response from the Centre and others on Friday in the gas leak incident in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, saying "there appears to be a failure to comply with the said Rules and other statutory provisions".
