Markets regulator Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has developed an online mechanism for registration of commodity derivative brokers as members of such exchanges. Sebi began regulating commodities derivatives market earlier this year after the merger of the erstwhile FMC (Forward Markets Commission) with it.

The merger of over 60-year-old Forward Markets Commission (FMC) with the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) was formalised today with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley ringing the customary stock market bell.

In the first ever merger of two regulators, the Forward Markets Commission (FMC), which is an over 60-year-old commodities regulatory body, on Monday merged with capital markets watchdog Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley ringing the customary stock market bell to formalise the amalgamation.

Securities and Exchange Board of India Chairman U K Sinha has said the merger process of the Forward Markets Commission (FMC) with the capital market regulator will be completed by September this year.

Announced by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in Budget for 2015-16, the merger will help streamline regulations and curb wild speculations in commodities market, while facilitating participation of domestic and foreign institutional investors and launch of new products such as options.
