Star Wars in Tamil Nadu, As Actors Tussle For Artiste's Association

About 3,200 actors and theatre artistes will elect the new team on the 18th.

Chennai: It is a clash of two heroes from Tamil cinema. Young turk Vishal takes on veteran Sarath Kumar in the race to capture the South Indian Artiste's Association.

For nine years, Sarath Kumar who is a legislator and ally of the ruling AIADMK has been undisputed king of the body. Vishal has challenged that, questioning why for a Rs 2 crore annual revenue, a prime property owned by the association is being leased to build a multiplex.

Vishal said, "We don't have a place for us. The 19 grounds property is not with us. We want to get back and build an auditorium and place for us where we can stage plays and get together as a family."

Sarath Kumar, the incumbent President says, "All allegations will be disproved when we win elections. We've done so much good to members, we would win."

Some say it is a clash of ego between the stars. About 3,200 actors and theatre artistes will elect the new team on the 18th.

Actor Kamal Haasan has endorsed the nomination of popular actor Nasser for the top job, while Superstar Rajinikanth stayed neutral.

Radhika Sarath Kumar, actor and wife of Sarat Kumar said, "The way they went about it, I feel it's wrong. I'm sad the actor community is so divided. They've made it like a TV serial going to the media for everything while we are all just a call away."

Popular actor Nasser countered her saying, "When we had allegations they never had answers and they asked us to contest and do things the way we want."

Worried that the tussle could spill over to the studio floors, film producers are attempting a compromise.
