DMDK Chief Vijayakanth Loses Leader of Opposition Post As 8 Legislators Quit Party

A total of ten legislators from DMDK, PMK and resigned today

Chennai: Actor and DMDK Chief Vijayakanth lost his position as the Leader of Opposition after eight of his lawmakers in Tamil Nadu submitted their resignation to the Assembly Speaker today.

However, the Speaker said that no other leader in the state qualifies for the position as no party has the minimum number of 24 legislators.

A total of ten legislators from DMDK, PMK and PT who resigned are likely to join the ruling AIADMK on Chief Minister Jayalalithaa's birthday on Wednesday.

These political developments happened a day after DMDK leaders including Vijayakanth and his wife slammed the ruling AIADMK at their "Turning Point" conference in Kancheepuram in the run up to the Assembly polls due in May.

Actor Vijayakanth's DMDK party had fought the 2011 state elections in alliance with Jayalalithaa and won 29 seats.Soon after, he parted ways with AIADMK.

One of the legislators who left the party said: "As part of DMDK we could do not do any development work in our constituency.  That's why we turned pro-AIADMK."

Actor Vijayakanth is yet to react. However those close to him say "Its betrayal by the 8 MLAs".
