Srinagar-Jammu highway closed for second day

Srinagar: The Srinagar-Jammu highway remained closed Saturday for the second day running due to snow and landslides, an official said.

No vehicle would be allowed to ply on the highway Saturday, said a traffic official.

Heavy snow in Qazigund-Bannihal sector of the over 300-km long highway had stopped traffic since Friday morning.

Many stranded vehicles had been allowed to move towards Srinagar Friday afternoon, while they were not allowed to move on the highway either from Jammu or Srinagar.

"Before undertaking the journey passengers must contact the traffic control rooms in Srinagar and Jammu," a senior traffic police official said.

All the essential supplies to the landlocked Valley are routed through the Jammu-Srinagar highway and continued blockade could result in scarcity of essential supplies here.
