Indian boxers settle for silvers in Russia

New Delhi: Indian pugilists had to settle for silvers after all three boxers -- Amandeep Singh, Akshay Kumar and Manpreet Singh -- lost their respective final bouts in the Magomed - Salam Umakhanov Memorial Boxing Championship in Makhachkala, Russia.

In the 48kg final Amandeep lost to Olympian Danielyn Oganes of Armenia by a slender margin of 3:5, while Akshay Kumar lost to Polynsky Dmitry of Russia 1:4 in the 57kg category.

However, it was Manpreet who had the most disappointing day as he could not even participate in the final due to a nose injury that he sustained during his hard-fought semifinal bout against Khomaster Artur of Germany.

Meanwhile, the Indian women team participating in the International Boxing Tournament at St Petersburg, Russia also had a mediocre campaign as they could not manage more than one bronze.

Sangita Devi (81kg) lost to local pugilist Yavorskaya M on points in the semifinals to bring home the lone medal.

In the 48kg preliminary round, Kalpana Choudhary lost to V Makresova of Ukraine, while Chhoto Loura went down to Kob Tatyana of Kazakhstan in 51kg category.

Sushma Kumari (54kg) defeated Russian Usachenko Victoriya in the preliminary round before going down to Zhang Qin of China in quarterfinal.

Laxmi Padhya also had a similar fate when she lost to I Sagaydakovskaya of Russia in the preliminary round of 75kg category.
