Yoga to help MLAs in Karnataka beat work stress

Yoga to help MLAs in Karnataka beat work stress
Bangalore: One is used to watching MLAs yawn, sleep and snore during Assembly sessions in India. But the recently elected 224 MLAs of Karnataka want to set an example by remaining fit and active.

No, they won't be cutting down on the 'masala dosas' and 'bisibele bhat' for breakfast, but will learn yoga for a good one hour a day, that too at their office - the Vidhan Soudha!

When MLAs cutting across party lines are together in one room, there is bound to be a lot of noise.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has insisted that all MLAs learn yoga, for one hour a day at the Vidhan Soudha. He and many from his cabinet may be irregular students, but for some like Anjaneyalu, the Social Welfare Minister of Karnataka, the welfare of the mind and the body comes first.

Kona Reddy, MLA from Dharwad weighs 83 kgs. He says that he aims at losing at least 5 kgs by the end of the budget session.

"I have been asking all the MLAs to join," says Mr Reddy. "I feel so happy and positive since the last four days. There is always tension in constituency and so many issues. This gives relief," he adds.

Politics comes easy for Mandya veteran Narendra Swamy, but breathing exercises get the sweat out of the Women and Child Welfare Minister.

"I began only two days ago. I never did any form of exercise or yoga before," says Mr Swamy.

First some music, and then some song and dance. If this is to be, then the sight of MLAs sleeping through assembly sessions may well disappear.
