Training Centre For Marine Commandos to Come Up in Tamil Nadu

Rameswaram,Tamil Nadu: Providing a major boost to coastal security of the state, a centre to train Marine Commandos, the first of its kind in Tamil Nadu, would come up at nearby Olakkuda (a village roughly 3 km from Rameswaram), a top official of the Coastal Marine police said today.

Additional Director General of Police of CMP, Shylendra Babu said the need for the centre, spread over 237 acres, was felt after the Mumbai terror attack some years ago.

This centre would provide a major boost to coastal security of the state as it was close to the Naval Signal Centre, he told reporters after visiting the site.

He claimed that better patrolling by Coastal Marine police has resulted in a drastic fall in smuggling of gold to Tamil Nadu over the last six months and  no incidents of piracy off the coast have been reported.

"There has been a drastic fall in smuggling of gold into Tamil Nadu over the last six months due to better patrolling by Coastal Marine Police. There have also been no incidents of piracy during this period," he said.

He said 30 more coastal police stations at a total cost of Rs 60 crore would soon become operational in Tamil Nadu and added that police personnel there would be provided high speed boats fitted with machine guns.
