Tamil Nadu to Set up Cadaver Transplantation Authority

Chennai: To strengthen and expand cadaver transplantation efforts in the state, Tamil Nadu Government today proposed a Cadaver Transplantation Authority besides a Regional Centre for Organ Transplantation.

The proposal came in the wake of significant number of organ transplants in the state, Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr C Vijayabaskar informed the Tamil Nadu Assembly. "This will benefit those awaiting organ transplant for a long time," he added.

Further, the government will examine establishing medical colleges in districts where there were none, he said. "At present, 19 government medical colleges are functioning in 17 (of the 32) districts. In the remaining districts, in a phased manner, Government will examine establishment of new government medical colleges," he said.

The AIADMK government had established two medical colleges, one each at Sivaganga and Thiruvannamalai, since it took over even as it had increased the number of MBBS seats.

As many as 610 MBBS seats had been added, taking the total to 2,555 in 2013-14, he said, adding, "the additional seats created are subject to inspections by Medical Council of India (MCI) till they finally get recognised."
