No Beauty Contests For Tamil Nadu Colleges, Says Madras High Court

The Madras High court will hear the case again on February 20.

Chennai:

Beauty contests and pageants in schools and colleges are banned because they do nothing to further a student's education, the Madras High Court has ruled.

The order - delivered yesterday while the court examines the issue further-  says it's unclear " how 'walking the ramp' would benefit a student pursuing a course in engineering."

A woman student, PS Akshaya, who won a beauty contest at an engineering college in 2013 was allegedly promised a prize of Rs. 25 lakh. The student's mother has said in court that when they tried to claim the money, the university said it was not aware of the event.

The case will next be heard on the 20th of this month.
