Wanted doctor couple from Beed surrender
Pune: Beed-based doctor couple Sudam and Saraswati Munde charged with conducting an illegal abortion on an eight-month pregnant woman, who died during the operation, finally surrendered at the Parli police station yesterday evening.

Superintendent of Police Dattatreya Mandlik, Beed district, said, "We were chasing him continuously and the process of seizing his properties was going on. He was left with no option other than to surrender."

The couple has been booked under relevant sections of the IPC and will be produced in Parli court today morning. "Once he is in police custody, we will start with our interrogation," Mandlik said.

Varsha Deshpande, social activist for the cause of female foeticide and owner of Led Laadki Abhiyaan said, "Now that they have surrendered, day-to-day hearing should be done and the case should be transferred out of Marathwada region," Deshpaned said.

She added that the police should take extra precautions with the evidence and provide due protection to the witnesses. Twenty eight-year-old Vijaymala Patekar, died on May 18 while Munde and his wife were conducting an abortion on her at their hospital in Parli. The couple has also been accused of carrying out sex determination tests and feeding female foetuses to dogs.
