When PM Modi Met his 'Young Friend' Who Won Bhagavad Gita Competition

Maryam Asif Siddiqui first made headlines by winning the 'Gita Champions League' - a competition organised by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a very special visitor today. Maryam Asif Siddiqui, the 12-year-old Mumbai student who won a Bhagavad Gita-related competition in April, was photographed handing the PM a bouquet.

The social media savvy PM posted the picture on Twitter, referring to Maryam as his "young friend".
 
PM Modi's tweet has already been retweeted 1,400 times since it was posted late Thursday afternoon. Some 2,100 people have 'favourited' it.

Maryam, a student of Mumbai's Cosmopolitan High School and Muslim by religion, first made headlines by winning the 'Gita Champions League' - a competition organised by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) - and is now taking the country by storm by donating all her cash rewards to various charities in different states.

At almost every event organised to felicitate not just her win but her ideologies as well, Maryam has contributed cheques of Rs 11,000 to several causes, which now include the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) and the Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan, Mr Modi's pet project.

In a second tweet, PM Modi mentioned Maryam's special donations, calling her "interest in various religions" inspiring.
 
This tweet has also been well-received by the Twitterati, who have retweeted it over nine hundred times.
