A powerful image from the Black Lives Matter protests in USA has fired up public imagination and social media. The picture was taken in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where Alton Sterling, 37 and black, was shot by two white police officers last week.

The picture, hailed as being definitive of the protests across USA, shows a lone demonstrator standing calmly in front of cops in riot gear, approaching her in what looks like an aggressive manner.

The arresting image was clicked by Reuters' photographer Jonathan Bachman on July 9 and promptly made its way online. The woman in the picture has now been identified as Ieshia Evans, a 28-year-old nurse and mother to a five-year-old boy, by DailyMail.

According to several reports, she was detained by police but later released.

On Facebook and Twitter, the poignant moment has been compared to the famous 'Tank Man' image from the Tiananmen Square protests of 1989.

The picture also brings to mind the one taken at last year's demonstrations in Macedonia. Also courtesy Reuters, the photo captured a young female protestor, later identified as Jasmin Golubovska, using a policeman's riot shield as a mirror to apply red lipstick moments before planting a kiss on it.
