This Beautiful Underwater Forest Provides an Amazing Habitat for Fish

Under the tree! This beautiful forest is in fact an unintended consequence of a man-made structure.

The trees, in Padnag Bai, Bali, are in fact the sunken posts of a jetty which was originally destined as a docking station for cruise ships but was deemed too short. But Lukas Szolc-Nartowski, 37, a diver in Bali, found that in the five years the posts had not been used a build-up of soft coral had turned it into a shelter for juvenile fish.

In order to snap the amazing scenes, Lukas borrowed specialist underwater photography equipment for the trip to his favourite diving spot.

Lukas said: "The pillars where the jetty is have been there for five years and have become covered in soft coral and makes them look like an underwater forest. The jetty itself was originally built to be a docking station for large cruise ships, but because of its short length it was never used for that purpose."

"The forest makes it a paradise for juvenile fish which are sometimes so plentiful that they block out the sun. You have to wave your hand in front of your face so that you are able to see over a meter away. It is one of my favourite diving spots and just has amazing underwater scenes out there," he added.
