Mumbai: Chhatrapati Shivaji museum gets its first museuo-bus

Mumbai: Have you heard of a museuo-bus? The city's prominent museum, Chhatrapati Shivaji Vastu Sangrahalaya, is set to become the first museum in Mumbai to introduce the concept of a museuo-bus, a museum display on the wheels.

"The museum right now going through a major upgrade and is set to become more visitor friendly. The museuo-bus is one of the wow-factors of the plan. It is like taking the museum to the people. Besides this, the museum will be upgraded to have viewing galleries, a docu-film on the history and spirit of Mumbaiand also dedicated children's activity centre," museum director Sabyasachi Mukherjee told DNA.

Mumbaikars are waiting to see the city's first museum on wheels and counsellor Pragya AB talks about its many benefits. "The museuo-bus will surely be an attraction. It is a popular concept abroad and the museum is doing a great thing by starting it in Mumbai. This will impress children and citizens in general and will definitely generate interest,"said 30-year-old counsellor Pragya AB.

The motorised museum will exhibit displays from the museum and take it to parts of the city and show it to the people who have not visited the museum. Motorised mobile museums date back as far as 1948, when Illinois State Museum's 'Museum Mobile' started the ever popular trend of a museum on wheels.

The museum is also upgrading its conservation lab over a three-year period, courtesy a grant from the Ministry of Culture. They have almost completed phase I at a cost is Rs12.43 crore. The Ministry of Culture has again sanctioned Rs11.46 crores for Phase II of the project.

Taking help of new-age technology, the museum has also planned a series of DVDs detailing the story of Indian sculptures. The DVD will present the various important sculptures present in the museums and related them to ancient temples to build a theme on the subject. Twelve such educational DVDs will be launched based on various themes related to the collection in the museum.
