Mumbai:
Following an argument over sharing seats, a teenager threw a four-year-old girl out of a running train between Kurla and Vidyavihar on Tuesday.
While the girl, Sadhana, sustained severe head injuries and has been admitted to the ICUof Sion hospital, the 19-year-old accused too is in hospital. The construction worker from Kandivli was badly beaten by passengers on the train.
"The child suffered head injuries and has fractured her elbow and knee joint. She is now stable, but under observation in the intensive care unit," Dr Sandhya Kamat, dean of Sion hospital, said. The CT scan of her head has shown no abnormalities, the doctor said.
"My heart is still racing," the girl's mother Kalpana said. "My child cries throughout the day for a small injury. This is too much."
An officer from the Government Railway Police said Sadhana Samir Jamdade was returning from Dadar with her family. They were on their way to Kalyan when the incident occurred, he said.
My elder brother Samir, his wife Kalpana, daughters Monika and Sadhana, son Nagraj had come with me and my family to Chaityabhoomi at Dadar to pay homage to Babasaheb," Sunil Jamdade, the girl's uncle, said.
"We were at the Shivaji Park beach till 3am on Tuesday," he said. "We reached Dadar station around five in the morning and boarded the 5:30am Bhusawal passenger from platform 4 to go back to Kalyan."
Sadhana was sitting on her father's lap, he said. When the train was passing between Kurla and Vidyavihar, a 19-year-old boy approached Samir and asked him in Hindi why he had occupied all the seats.
When Samir asked him what was bothering him, he told us that he would show what was bothering him, he said. Before we could understand what was happening, the boy suddenly snatched Sadhana and ran towards the door, he said. "We ran after him but could not stop him from throwing Sadhana out of the train."
While one of the family members pulled the chain, other passengers pounced on the boy and started beating him up, the GRP officer said. The train stopped just outside Vidyavihar station.
While Sunil got off the train to look for his niece, his brother and other passengers held on to the boy. Sunil found a bloodied and unconscious Sadhana lying beside the tracks. She was taken to Rajawadi Hospital and then shifted to Sion hospital. The boy was beaten up before being handed over to the railway police in Kalyan. He was taken to Rukhmini Hospital in Kalyan and then shifted to JJ Hospital, another officer said.
"We have registered a case under section 307 ( attempt to kill) of the IPC and section 152 (hurting or attempting to hurt a person travelling on a train) of the Indian Railway Act against him," senior inspector Dilip Gore of Kurla railway police station said.
