Man rams SUV into daughter's boyfriend

Mumbai: The RCF police have arrested a 42-year-old businessman for attempting to kill a teenager, by ramming his SUV into the latter's bike at Vashinaka in Chembur because he suspected him of having an affair with his daughter.

Police said that the accused, Devendra Mariappa Mehatre (42), a resident of Sector 20, Koparkhairane, Navi Mumbai rammed his Scorpio thrice into Kishan Shahu Pol's (19) bike on Tuesday around 5.30 pm.

The victim was severely injured and was rushed to Shatabdi hospital for treatment. He is currently out of danger.

"We have seized Mehatre's white Scorpio and booked him for attempt to murder," confirmed Shirish N Shelke, senior police inspector of RCF police station.

According to the police, the accused's daughter and Pol lived in the same locality in Koparkhairane. Sometime ago, Pol shifted to Kishan Nagar near Vashinaka but the two continued to meet.

"The two used to chat over the phone and meet up regularly. In September, Pol accompanied Mehatre's daughter to Tirupati Balaji temple. Mehatre, who was unaware of the incident, came to know about it recently and, enraged, decided to exact revenge," said Shelke, elaborating on the cause of the incident. On Tuesday, Mehatre drove to Pol's neighbourhood in Koparkhairane. When he reached Vashinaka junction, he saw Pol waiting on a motorcycle under a tree by the side of the road. The accused sped towards Pol and slammed the SUV into his bike.

"Not just once, Mehatre backed up and crashed into Pol's motorcycle at least three times. After the incident, the accused fled from the spot. Some of the pedestrians rushed Pol to Shatabdi hospital where he underwent treatment," an officer from RCF police station said.

Later, the RCF police were informed about the incident and a case of attempt to murder was registered against the accused.

Mehatre was produced before the Kurla metropolitan magistrate court and was remanded to police custody till October 14.
