Now that's a headline we never imagined ourselves writing! We can't remember a time when the ever-poised Duchess of Cambridge was anything less than perfectly and elegantly dressed, looking every bit the loved British royal that she is. Which is why we almost fell off our chairs in shock when pictures of Kate Middleton and Prince William attending a dinner party hosted by the British Ambassador to Sweden a couple of days ago, surfaced on the Internet.
And we can't help but ask: what on earth possessed Kate to wear that mustard-coloured floral monstrosity? The steep price tag of the gown, from British designer Erdem, certainly befits the stature of a royal - it costs a cool £1,945 (Rs 1.76 lakh, approximately) - but makes her stick out like a sore thumb in the royal lineup that included Sweden's Crown Prince Daniel and Princess Victoria. Two thumbs down to the fluted sleeved-gown with a ruffled mandarin collar that let Kate (and her baby bump!) down so badly.
We're all for stepping out of comfort zones and testing boundaries, but this sartorial experiment was just way too much of a misfit, and an eyesore, for Kate's demure, elegant style.
Another fashion risk that didn't pay off, in our opinion, was another floral dress from Erdem that she wore for a reception, the day after the dinner. This time, it was an ornate blue number in velvet, and while it didn't make Kate's skin look sallow and tired like the previous one, we still aren't fans. What we did love, though, were her Gianvito Rossi shoes, the Ida Sjostedt coat with the Troy London faux fur collar and cuffs that she arrived in.
Thankfully, even though Kate's Erdem picks had fashion and royal watchers fiercely divided, her fashion picks the rest of the time received near-unanimous appreciation. She looked radiant in a red and white Catherine Walker houndstooth coat, worn over an Alexander McQueen boucle dress, chunky burgundy fringed pumps from Tod's and a matching burgundy Chanel quilted bag.
Catherine Walker was clearly a favourite on the tour, with Kate opting for a forest green coat-dress and matching coat for another appearance. Paired with her faux furs, and trusty chunky heels from Tod's, as well as knee-high boots, she looked warm, comfortable and delighted. Just as we like to see her.
We were also big fans of her casual look for her very first engagement in Stockholm - black jeans, Burberry double-breasted coat and a knit sweater from Swedish designer Fjallraven. Along with practical waterproof snow boots and a knitted pomp-pom hat.
Can't wait to see what more Kate has in store for us, as the tour progresses from Sweden to Norway.
